Charles MacInerney began studying yoga and meditation in 1971 with teachers including Thich Nhat Hanh. Since 1989 he has taught more than 25,000 students and is recognized by Yoga Alliance at its highest level (E-RYT 500) and as a certified yoga therapist (C-IAYT) with the International Association of Yoga Therapists.
He is the co-founder and lead instructor of Living Yoga Teacher Training, whose graduates now teach in 45 U.S. states and 15 countries. Charles founded the Texas Yoga Retreat (now in its 25th year), which unites dozens of teachers from 17 lineages and attracts 150+ participants annually, as well as the original Free Day of Yoga in Austin (1998), a model now
celebrated in cities nationwide.
A pioneer in therapeutic applications of yoga, Charles collaborated with Seton and Austin Heart hospitals from 1998–2001 to design and implement mind-body cardiac reversal and rehabilitation programs. He has presented three times at the International Association of Yoga Therapists’ Symposium on Yoga Therapy and Research (most recently 2022) and regularly teaches at national conferences on yoga, wellness, and integrative medicine.
In 2015 he received the Yoga Service Award from the Consul General of India. A longtime contributor to Yoga Journal and a certified creative-writing retreat facilitator with Amherst Writers & Artists, Charles brings more than five decades of practice and 35 years of teaching experience to every workshop he leads.
