Bill Judge

Bill Judge is a retired college professor who has been “playing” tai chi for many decades. He was introduced to the practice back in 1985 while studying for his doctoral degree. He received training from several teachers who studied under Professor Chen Man-Ching. Bill’s early training was in the most popular form of Tai Chi –Yang Style Short Form as well as “push hands” whereby two players engage in playful sparring as they apply their knowledge of Tai Chi principles. My first teacher was Master Li, in Durham and later from Sifu Ben Lo in San Francisco and most recently, from Sifu Bill Phillips in New York City.

Bill competed in the national “A Taste of China” push hands tournament in Winchester, Virginia in 1990 to which he defeated his first two opponents and then came up against the previous year’s national champion. He lost that event, but learned a lot about himself and the famous Taoist expression: “Invest in loss”.

Bill has been teaching since 2019. His approach is highly interactive. “We first begin awakening the chi by using classic Qigong exercises. Next, we demonstrate some postures and their flow and conclude with the entire class doing the learned postures together accompanied by traditional Chinese music.”
